Rules of Turtle-Begging(taiwanese:khit-ku)
The rules of turtle-begging involve praying to the gods for the items on the altar, which include turtle-shaped items such as fat-pork turtles and rice turtles. Successfully obtaining these items through prayer symbolizes receiving the gods' blessings, marking an auspicious start to the new year. Traditionally, the rule of turtle-begging is "Beg this year, return next year!" Worshippers seek the gods' consent through the divination blocks (holy blocks). Those who succeed in their prayers return to the temple the following year to fulfill their vows and express gratitude for the gods' protection over the past year.
Today, the Lantern Festival's turtle-begging tradition in Penghu has evolved into a rich and diverse cultural experience. Each temple has its unique way of turtle-begging. The most common method involves paying a fee to participate, with prizes corresponding to the number of successful divinations. Some temples also offer free turtle-begging opportunities, with prizes ranging from edible fat-pork turtles and bread turtles to toys and stationery.
